Cradling her in his arms, he is bloody to the elbows. 

She is getting cold already. He grips her tightly, as if in doing so he could bring her back, pull her away from the edge of the abyss. But she is already gone.

Today he is supposed to be a father.  She is supposed to be a mother. 

But there is no joy. Just blood. Endless, unstemming blood.

He was supposed to be a doctor.

He can’t hear the baby cry over the sound of his heartbreak. It will be years before he is strong enough to hold her.
