Steven sits alone(?), and eats steak.
Steven couldn’t finish the steak.
He was surprised– somewhere, distantly, beyond the hollow distress that gnawed through his chest– that he could eat it at all without getting sick. He’d kind of expected to. Almost been looking forward to it. Being sick would’ve forced all of the bitter bile of confusion and regret out from where it sat heavy in his stomach.
Heavier, certainly, than the steak.
“I shouldn’t be eating this,” Steven thought to himself.
Distantly, a thought returned, “You shouldn’t have ordered it well done. What a waste.”
Steven pushed the thought away. It didn’t feel like his.
