Summary:

The captain contemplates the hook.

He contemplates the hook, turning his arm this way and that to watch it flash and catch the light.

It is a beautiful thing, graceful and curved like the body of a courtesan. More beautiful perhaps than the ungainly flesh it replaces.

It is a deadly thing, wicked and sharp like the reaper’s own blade. More deadly perhaps than the soft fingers that preceded it.

It is a cold thing. There is no warmth within it to replace what was taken.

The captain sits and wonders if all of the warmth that was in him has been cut away too.
