Summary:
The first time Mary sleeps, it’s in Ib’s bed.
The first night that she is alive Mary sleeps in Ib’s bed. No one is sure why Mary doesn’t have her own bed, but Mary doesn’t mind at all. She’d rather sleep with her sister.
Mary sleeps curled tightly against Ib, her arms around her, as if she’s afraid to let her go. Ib doesn’t mind, curling her heels with Mary’s and radiating warmth, real, human warmth under the covers. Mary smells the soap in Ib’s hair as she lays there, and the scent calms her.
This is the first time Mary has ever slept.
She dreams of Garry screaming.
